Julie Walters has revealed how liberated she feels after at last coming through a near ten-year battle with the menopause.

The actress would sometimes endure as many as 15 hot flushes in a night which could be triggered by anything from decaffeinated coffee to thinking about an acting role.

But those days are finally over for the 63-year-old Mamma Mia! and Harry Potter star who said: ‘It’s liberating... it’s a huge relief.

‘It’s liberating to be out of the rat race that life is – it’s a huge relief – both going through it and coming out the other side.

'It’s different when you’re going through it because you have things you have to deal with, but that’s life and every so often you have to address things and deal with them the best you can.

'If you deal with it in a healthy fashion then I think you come out the other side a better person.

'I’ve got so much more energy now than I ever had in my early 50s before the menopause.’

She recalled that when she was filming her Harry Potter role as Molly Weasley she had to ask for the air conditioning to be turned on to deal with her heat surges which first affected her when she was in a play at the National Theatre.

In those days a tin tray waved in front of her cooled her down.

Miss Walters came through the menopause tunnel two years ago and credits acupuncture and avoiding alcohol for helping her manage.

She said: ‘The only lasting effect of the menopause is that it’s destroyed my vocabulary!

‘The worst aspect for me were the hot flushes and not being able to sleep – my sleep has always been a bit fragile but it was very bad through that time and trying to work at the same time.

'Trying to film when you’re constantly flushing is very difficult – I remember being on Harry Potter and they had to turn the air conditioning onto me.

'I used to get so hot with all the padding and the wig and everything.’

She made her comments as she promoted her latest film, The Harry Hill Movie, which opened nationwide on Friday.

The actress, who has a daughter Maisie, 25, with her husband Grant Roffey, admits she is no longer as ambitious as she once was, saying: ‘I’m more comfortable now that I’m in my sixties.

‘It’s been a gradual process that’s kicked in over time as I went through my 50s.

'I didn’t feel this comfortable in my 40s – nowhere near. It’s all about looking after yourself and being honest.’
